The Twitter account of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal website was hacked on Thursday (September 3) morning.

Tweets appeared urging followers to make donations to "PM National Relief Fund for COVID-19" through cryptocurrency.

Cyble had claimed the hacker group had also demanded ransom, as it had got unrestricted access to the firm's database. We are actively investigating the situation.

Twitter, in an email to news agency Reuters, said that it has taken "steps to secure the compromised account" and is "actively investigating" the situation.

Twitter said at this time there is no indication or evidence of any correlation between this account compromise and the incident that took place in July.

A series of tweets were sent from the account asking followers to donate cryptocurrency to a relief fund.

The tweets were taken down by Twitter. "At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted", a Twitter spokeswoman said.

This is the latest high-profile security breach after similar attacks in July on United States presidential hopeful Joe Biden and Tesla founder Elon Musk.

The account, with over 2.5 million followers, is the official Twitter handle for Modi's personal website and the Narendra Modi mobile application.

Attackers were able to bypass the accounts' security because they had gained access to Twitter's own internal administration tools.

This comes after several Twitter accounts of prominent personalities were hacked in July. Handles belonging to former USA president Barack Obama, 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, among others, each sent out tweets requesting Bitcoin donations, racking up more than $100,000 for the hackers. Besides this, accounts of celebrities Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, were also breached.
