Grand Slam bubble bursts for US teen Gauff

Gauff will look to use her powerful groundstrokes to dictate play Gauff will look to use her powerful groundstrokes to dictate play

The U.S. Open is the first Grand Slam event to take place since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

American tennis sensation Coco Gauff, who has overachieved in the early stages of her promising career, lost in the first round of the 2020 US Open on Monday in NY. Should the 145th-ranked Ukrainian make the long trip to NY for the U.S. Open not knowing whether she'd be in the field?

Osaka, after slipping in her second set, came out strong in the third to beat Doi 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 on Monday night to advance out of the first round. She had never lost in the first two rounds. "I think I compete just as hard with fans or not", she said.

"I just got on Tour a little over a year ago, so I still have a lot to learn and a long ways to go". Although Gauff saved three match points, Sevastova eventually closed out the win, converting her fourth match point. Most of the match was played in silence, only disrupted by the sounds of planes flying overhead and the squeal of the nearby 7 train. She looked to be in good position as she approached the net for an overhead, but got it all wrong and Sevastova had grabbed a sloppy opening set.

Gauff, who stormed onto the scene past year when she beat her idol, Venus Williams, at Wimbledon and went on to reach the fourth round of the tournament, told reporters she's hungry to get more playing time as she develops her craft.

Gauff finished with 40 unforced errors, including 13 double faults, to fall in the opening round. "I kind of expected it because of the first round nerves, and she's also a very tough opponent".

"I don't really think so", Gauff said after the match, when asked if fans could have helped her.

"That's what I need on Tour".

"I wish I would play like this when I was 16 years old", Sevastova said.

'I was just calm in the end, ' said Sevastova, a US Open semi-finalist in 2018. She won the third set, 6-4.

2016 victor Angelique Kerber made her post-hiatus debut with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ajla Tomljanovic.

The teenager, yet to break into the world's top 50 despite being touted as a future Slam champion by a clutch of former players, will be staying with the NY bubble (because of the coronavirus outbreak) a little longer.

Her form going into the slam was indifferent. She used to be ranked No. 1 and is seeded 17th in NY.

They will play Whitney Osuigwe/ Hailey Baptiste in the first round. The Greek player needed only one hour and 38 minutes to seal a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 win.

Djokovic gave a great salute to the empty stands at Arthur Ashe Stadium right after the win, too.

Another Czech, 12th-seeded Marketa Vondrousova, moved on with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Belgium's Greetje Minnen.

And, of course, there were no raucous roars or belittling boos for any matches.

Kerber won the 2016 US Open but lost in the first round a year ago. "So I can see success for myself, and finally I won a match".

On Monday, she returned to Louis Armstrong Stadium, where the American had thrived in front of a partisan crowd.

She took a chance that paid off, even though she lost in the first round.
