FEMA approves Minnesota's request for additional $300 unemployment benefits

The additional benefits are retroactive to August 1.

Officials say anyone who collected COVID-related unemployment benefits for the weeks ending Aug. 1, Aug. 8, and Aug. 15 will be eligible to receive the extra money baring any special circumstances. They will not receive an additional $100 a week supplement from the state.

Thus, states must reapply each week after the first three weeks, giving FEMA the opportunity to calculate the program's remaining balance after the first round of grants. Many payments will arrive this week, and all will be delivered by September 15, according to the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance.

To receive the additional $300 a week, anyone who is now receiving unemployment benefits does not need to reapply or do anything other than complete their weekly benefits request.

Adkins said to be eligible for the additional $400, unemployed workers would have to have been able to receive at least $100 a week in standard benefits.

Because of the difficulty in implementing this entirely new program at the state level, New Jersey Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angel stated that even if the state's application for these funds is approved by FEMA in the next few days, these payments will most likely not reach unemployed workers until October at the earliest.

Funding for this program comes from FEMA disaster relief funds and will end when the federal program exhausts its grant funding or Congress enacts legislation for a supplemental federal UI program. Trump bypassed lawmakers by allocating FEMA disaster relief money.
