The power wielded by the Democratic Party's far left, symbolized by New York's Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known as AOC, was demonstrated Tuesday by the defeat of Rep. Joe Kennedy III in the U.S. Senate primary in MA.

With the loss, Kennedy, 39, becomes the first member of his family to lose a race in MA.

AOC and Markey joined forces at the beginning of her Congressional career in 2019 to launch matching Green New Deal resolutions in the House and Senate.

Markey, who co-sponsored the Green New Deal with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and had cultivated mass support among progressives in the race, described via Twitter his victory as an "undeniable mandate for change". "Kennedy, meanwhile, secured the endorsements of older establishment figures like Nancy Pelosi and the late John Lewis".

Just after 10 p.m., Kennedy staffers informed reporters that the congressman had called the senator and conceded.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez partnered with Sen. Sunrise, in fact, made Markey their top priority in this election cycle, which very likely drained funds from far-left challengers to other MA lawmakers, such as Alex Morse in his race against House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rich Neal - Neal won with 60% of the vote.

The race pitted two well-liked progressives against one another, but it was Markey's organisational energy and appeal to the ascendant left that won out over Kennedy.

Kennedy, 39, is the grandson of former New York Senator and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.

In mid-August Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the other senator from MA and another top progressive, also backed Markey. The conclusion from it is clear - ideas will be the future of Democratic politics.

Should he win Tuesday, Kennedy is virtually assured victory in November's general election, but a primary loss would leave him out of Congress come January, as he cannot be on the ballot as a candidate for both Senate and House.

Candidates backed by progressive groups ousted three Democratic incumbents in this year's primaries: Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel in New York, Representative William Lacy Clay of Missouri and Representative Dan Lipinski of IL.

In the primary race for that seat, the tally was still too close to call Wednesday morning.

Looking superficially at this race, and bearing in mind a laundry list of primary upsets against older incumbents by younger and more energized challengers, one might think that Kennedy, whose opponent was in Congress before he was even born, was right for the moment. He said he was "incredibly proud" of what he fought for, describing Neal as "one of the most powerful members of Congress" and someone who "uses his power to benefit corporations and special interests".

"From the outset, we worked with the campaign to put climate change at the center of this race", Evan Weber, political director for the Sunrise Movement, said in a statement.
