In total, there are 16 Asian universities in the top 100, the highest total for Asia since the rankings began.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, has maintained its position in the global rankings and has also improved its rank among Indian Institutions.

Also this year, a record 1,527 institutions qualify for the 2021 edition - that's a 9pc increase from the 2020 rankings when 1,397 institutions qualified. Over the past five years, the USA has lost four positions in the overall top 200, with 63 in 2016 and 59 in 2021, as competition heats up for the top places.

Britain's University of Oxford retained its top spot for the fifth consecutive year.

THE World University Rankings 2021 has considered five parameters for assessing universities: Teaching (30%), Research (30%), Citations (30%), Industry Income (2.5%) and International Outlook (7.5%).

In terms of top 200 representation, the U.S. dominates with 59 institutions on the list, followed by the United Kingdom with 29 institutions, and Germany with 21 institutions.

Time Higher Education chief knowledge officer Phil Baty said the University of Auckland is to be commended for its achievements, particularly given the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This trend is likely to accelerate further as the Covid-19 pandemic heralds a ideal storm of huge challenges for primarily Western universities, particularly those in the United States and United Kingdom, who face the very real risk of losing significant worldwide student talent, and the billions of dollars in fees that they bring".

"Excellence in research lies at the heart of our identity as a university and has a fundamental influence on our teaching", she said.

Australia's top university, University of Melbourne, is ranked 31st.
