Meanwhile, 21 of Ontario's 34 public health units reported no new cases at all over the last 24 hours.

The researchers also report that women, older patients, people with more severe cases of COVDI-19, and nonsmokers had higher levels of antibodies; that almost a third of people infected reported having no symptoms; and that the new virus killed about 0.3 percent of everyone infected, about three times the rate of the seasonal flu.

An additional 79 people who live outside of Canada have tested positive for COVID-19 in B.C.

"Our results indicate that antiviral antibodies towards SARS-CoV-2 did not decrease in just 4 months right after analysis", the authors wrote. "There are at least three COVID-19 vaccines ahead of Novavax's vaccine in the U.S.".

However, the study shows how carefully antibody tests can determine the exact spread of the infection, Stephenson said.

"Keeping our groups small, using a mask when we are inside and in close contact with people we don't know, giving others the space to stay safe in uncontrolled environments, washing our hands regularly and always staying home when ill - these important actions will help to protect our communities and keep our loved ones safe".

Of those patients who were quarantined, 2.3% were seropositive, and 0.3% with unknown exposure were seropositive. And, while more than half of all SARS-CoV-2 infections had been diagnosed with qPCR, 14% occurred in individuals who were quarantined but not tested, or who had been tested but received a negative result, and 30% of the infections were found in people who were not quarantined or tested. The global case toll has topped 25.75 million cases, with more than 857,000 deaths. Antibodies generated to combat infection peaked in the two months following a positive diagnosis before plateauing for a further two months in more than 90 percent of recovered patients, the authors report.

"What they're seeing here is that they're inducing a pretty strong immune response", Jason Kindrachuk, an assistant professor of medical microbiology & infectious diseases at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg - who was not involved in the study - told Today.

This also gives hope for the future vaccine against the virus. Women, smokers and users of anti-inflammatory medication had lower levels of antibodies.

Stefansson had nothing to disclose.

Seder had no relevant relationships to disclose.
