“We will never give up”: Charlie republishes the Muhammad cartoons Charlie Hebdo attack: Satirical weekly to republish cartoons on Prophet Muhammed as trial starts

"All this, for that", the front cover reads in bold print above and below the reprinted cartoons, which were first published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in 2005.

In the centre of the cover is a cartoon of the Prophet drawn by its cartoonist Jean Cabut, who was killed in the 2015 attack.

The Kouachi brothers and a third Islamist gunman who killed five people in the 48 hours that followed the Charlie Hebdo massacre were shot dead by police in different stand-offs, but 14 of their alleged accomplices go on trial on Wednesday.

Its editorial team wrote that now was the right time to republish the cartoons, saying it was "essential" as the trial opens. Brothers Cherif and Said Kouachand and Amédy Coulibaly, the alleged perpetrators of the attacks, have been charged with financing terrorism, membership of a terrorist organization and supplying weapons to terrorists.

The Charlie Hebdo editor said "We will never lie down". Regardless, the security guard present at the office on January 7th, 2015, was killed by terror attackers Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, alongside the editorial staff, cartoonists, and others.

The newspaper's willingness to cause offence has made it a champion of free speech to many in France, while others believed it crossed a line too often.

Afta di 2015 attack, thousands of pipo enta streets to protest and di hashtag #JeSuisCharlie (I am Charlie) begin dey tren around di world.

The former director of Charlie Hebdo, Philippe Val, hailed their decision as a "remarkable idea" for defending freedom of thought and expression in the face of "terror".

The Paris-based weekly publication, which was founded in 1970, is famous for its provocative cartoons and daring takedowns of politicians, public figures and religious symbols of all faiths.

The French satirical weekly was attacked by Islamist gunmen in January 2015.

It advised Muslims to simply "ignore" them.

The cartoons are already visible online via Charlie Hebdo's website, it has been reported.

"The freedom to caricature is guaranteed for all, the freedom to love or not to love (the caricatures) as well".

The new edition will hit the newsstands on Wednesday, the first day of the trial of a group of 13 co-conspirators of the Hebdo attack killers.

The trial had been delayed several months with most French courtrooms closed over the coronavirus epidemic.
