Dr. Theresa Tam and her deputy, Dr. Howard Njoo, are offering that assessment one day after the Trudeau government announced the latest instalment in its plan to pre-buy tens of millions of doses of potential vaccines, signing deals with two American firms.

Canada, meanwhile, has also concluded agreements with Pfizer and Moderna for deliveries of millions of doses of their experimental vaccines, now in Phase 3 trials - among the most advanced.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced deals on Monday to secure up to 190 million doses of potential COVID-19 vaccines from a quartet of pharmaceutical companies.

"We are moving forward with clinical development of NVX-CoV2373 with a strong sense of urgency in our quest to deliver a vaccine to protect the world", Stanley C. Erck, president and CEO of Novavax, says in a release.

The aim is to encourage laboratories to manufacture sufficient quantities of vaccines and make sure they are available for developing countries.

Therefore the government is investing $126 million to establish a new biomanufacturing facility at the Human Health Therapeutics Research Centre in Montréal.

Biotechnology company "Novavax" says it has reached an agreement in principle with the federal government to supply up to 76 million doses of its vaccine.

Last month, the World Health Organization sent a letter to its 194 member countries with a request to join the program, called Covax, aimed at providing global access to an eventual coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine. It's now in stage two of its clinical trials and could be available as early as the second quarter of 2021. Multiple trials began in August in the United States and Australia, and from there will move onto "preliminary evaluation of efficacy".
