Severe Or Fatal COVID-19 Complications Very Rare In Children, Study Finds

Severe or fatal COVID-19 very rare in children study finds Covid-19 infection far less likely to be severe in children, finds large UK study

Even among asymptomatic children, the virus was detectable for a mean of 14.1 days.

BC health officials are reporting the province's first cases of a rare condition in children that's been temporally linked to COVID-19.

Those with a lower respiratory tract infection were positive for an average of 19.9 days.

Thanks to such measures, the researchers write, the medics were able to discover 90 infection cases among schoolchildren and teenagers, most of whom either displayed no symptoms at all or suffered from light forms of Covid-19.

What's more, one-fifth of asymptomatic children were still shedding the virus at the three-week mark. On average, the virus was present for 18 to 19 days in young Koreans with symptoms and for 14 days - in patients without symptoms.

She told media the person was a close contact of someone who had tested positive.

In a new study from South Korea, 22% of pediatric coronavirus cases were asymptomatic while the remaining 78% either had symptoms when they were tested or developed them after diagnosis.

A little more than one-fifth of the children - 22 percent - were asymptomatic.

The symptoms usually seen in those with MIS-C include conjunctivitis, a rash or gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

Drs. DeBiasi and Delaney note that each of these findings and additional questions could affect public health efforts continually being developed and refined to bring COVID-19 under control in the USA and around the world. Even though children might not form the most vulnerable category to be affected or undergo hospitalization, given how even a simple infection transmits in a classroom, children with COVID-19 can go on to infect a lot many people.

Another 18 children - or 20% - were presymptomatic, meaning they didn't look or feel sick at the time but eventually got symptoms later.

"This highlights the concept that infected children may be more likely to go unnoticed either with or without symptoms and continue on with their usual activities, which may contribute to viral circulation within their community". "Just because kids come back from school feeling great, doesn't mean they aren't going to spread the virus".

Professor Calum Semple, Professor in Child Health and Outbreak Medicine and Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician at the University of Liverpool, said: "The diligent work of our colleagues working in Child Health and the NIHR Clinical Research Network across the United Kingdom has led to this report which is the largest and most detailed description of covid-19 and MIS-C in children and young people".

The findings also identify new symptoms of a severe inflammation syndrome that significantly increases the risk of children with Covid-19 needing intensive care.

MENAFN provides the information "as is" without warranty of any kind. While 58 percent of the children had early onset symptoms.

"This is really the best we can hope for", he said. "In regions where use of face masks is not widely accepted or used by the general public, asymptomatic carriers may serve as an important reservoir that may facilitate silent spread through a community".
