The Pac-12 soon followed suit, but six other major college football conferences, including the powerhouse Southeastern Conference, are still forging ahead toward a season that will start in September.

The eight players suing the conference are redshirt freshman linebacker Garrett Snodgrass, sophomore linebacker Garrett Nelson, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Ethan Piper, redshirt freshman safety Noa Pola-Gates, freshman wide receiver Alante Brown, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Brant Banks, junior long snapper Brig Banks and redshirt freshman linebacker Jackson Hannah.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the Big Ten was not making public its efforts to have a football season that starts in either late fall or winter.

Which college football teams and conferences have canceled?

The 13-page lawsuit, which was posted to Twitter on Thursday via an account run by parents of Huskers players, contends that Big Ten's decision should be overturned on the grounds that it failed to adhere to established procedures in the decision-making process.

Big Ten officials were previously considering a schedule that would begin in January and end in March, with indoor stadiums in regions such as Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and Detroit possibly coming into play.

The Big Ten is under intense pressure since canceling its fall sports schedule due to COVID-19 concerns, including football, in early August.

"We share the disappointment that some student-athletes and their families are feeling". With 14 member schools, at least nine presidents would have needed to vote in support of postponing the season. While the Big Ten was the only conference Trump named specifically in his tweet, it's one of four conferences at the top level of college football with a postponed fall sports season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"This lawsuit isn't about money or damages, it's about real-life relief", Mike Flood, the lead attorney representing the athletes, said in a statement.

The Big Ten and first-year commissioner Kevin Warren have faced push back and criticism ever since, including a lawsuit filed by eight Nebraska players who want the decision overturned. There were reports of several conference schools trying to defy the Big Ten's orders and still play.
