Amazon launches wellness band that can read emotions from your voice

Amazon launches fitness band, app Amazon gets into health tracking, challenging Apple, Fitbit

Amazon has launched its first fitness bands and apps. In partnership with Halo's subscription service company, they created a device that could track a person's fat content, sleep activity, and even analyze tone voice.

Amazon-Halo band is now here!

People can turn off Halo microphones by pressing a button on the wristband, he added. Dr. Maulik Majmudar, Amazon Halo's principal medical officer, said in the launch, "Despite the rise in digital health services and devices over the last decade, we have not seen a corresponding improvement in population health in the USA".

According to Amazon, the Halo Band is different from regular fitness smartband as it doesn't come with a display and won't send constant notifications that may bother you.

The device offers battery life up to seven days, and fully charges from 0 per cent in less than 90 minutes. Those interested can choose from three fabric band colors at launch, with fabric and silicone sports bands available in 15 additional colors.

The app also rewards points on the intensity and duration of movement instead of just the number of steps taken. They are; Activity, Sleep, Body (body fat), Tone (mental and emotional health and wellbeing), and Labs, science-backed challenges to help you discover what health habits work best for you.

The band itself looks a lot like a screenless Fitbit tracker, but with a couple of various aspects: It has temperature level picking up, just like Fitbit's latest smartwatch, the Fitbit Sense, and a microphone that continuously scans a user's voice to identify psychological tone. There's something pretty amusing about taking notes regarding the emotions in your voice from an unthinking, unfeeling machine.

Unlike Apple Watch, Amazon Halo uses a points system when tracking exercise and sets a baseline goal of 150 points weekly.

In the press release of the presentation, Amazon says that it has been working on this technology for years, hiring medical and fitness experts who have supervised all the functions. This feature essentially 3D scans a user's body to measure and track their body fat percentage or BFP. You will need to wear tight, minimal clothing and keep 4-6 feet of space between you and your phone to click images.

The body scans works with four photos of the user taken in tight-fitting clothes, which then make up the 3D body model. This feature is powered by AI and it has been developed by the company's computer vision and machine learning team. Users can download or delete their data at any time directly from the app. If we do not renew the subscription, we will only have access to simple heart rate, step counter and sleep measurements. It's not clear exactly what early access means, or how many people will be selected to get a band, but the device now costs US$64.99 with six months of the premium membership thrown in.
