Champions League: Napoli president calls for Barcelona game to be moved

The teams are set to play their last-16 second leg tie at the Nou Camp on August 8 but the Napoli big-wig wants a change of plan.

And Napoli are concerned over the safety of playing the match in Barca with De Laurentiis suggesting it should be moved to Portugal.

"I hear a lot of perplexity and fear coming from Spain and they acting as if nothing is wrong. I do not understand why we should go to a city that at this moment has great problems", insisted the president. How long would it take to say that we play in Portugal, Germany or Switzerland? UEFA started to show concern after the growing number of outbreaks in the Catalan capital and they asked for guarantees, which the Catalan Government gave in a report.

The Azzurri chief executive attacked UEFA like this: "It seems that we are at school, at UEFA nobody knows how to do business, and also with our money".

"If they've made a decision to play the Champions League in Portugal and the Europa League in Germany, I think we can go to Portugal or Germany for the round of 16". By having all eight teams in the same city, UEFA will be able to monitor the competition closely. The last word, however, is with UEFA. The first leg of the round-of-16 encounter finished 1-1 in Naples in February.

The reverse fixture at Camp Nou was suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus outbreak, which saw all major leagues across Europe shut down for three months. Manchester, Turin and Munich are the other cities that will host the matches pending the round of 16.

The quarter-finals onwards will be completed in two stadiums in Portugal's capital, Lisbon, over just one leg in a World Cup-style mini-tournament. The qualifying rounds will be played in a single game and behind closed doors.
