Collectively, his films won 10 Oscars, 10 Golden Globes and 19 BAFTA Awards.

A spokesperson for the family confirmed in a statement that he died on Friday morning "following a lengthy illness".

Parker received his second Academy Awards nod 10 years later, for "Mississippi Burning".

Among some of his most famous films include Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Mississippi Burning, The Commitments, Evita and Angela's Ashes. It won two Oscars and gained Parker a best-director nomination. Grim, brutal, and deeply upsetting, the film represented a trend that would become common across Parker's career: a willingness and ability to pivot successfully from one genre to the next. His other credits included the family drama Shoot the Moon, the horror Angel Heart and the legal thriller The Life of David Gale.

British actor John Hurt, from left, American actor Brad Davis, author Billy Hayes, and British director Alan Parker appear in Cannes, France for the screening of their film Midnight Express at the 31st International Film Festival in 1978.

He frequently revisited his penchant for musical movies with hits such as "Fame", "The Commitments", and "Evita", starring Madonna, while he was also the man behind the camera for 1982's "Pink Floyd - The Wall", based on the rock band's album of the same name.

Parker was a notable director of musicals, a genre he both embraced and expanded. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.

Sir Alan then wrote and directed two short films and a television play set in wartime London before his first major success came with The Evacuees in 1975 - a television play written by Jack Rosenthal about the experiences of two Jewish boys evacuated from London during the Blitz.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, which hands out the Oscars, said on Twitter: "From Fame to Midnight Express, two-time Oscar nominee Alan Parker was a chameleon".

He is survived by his wife Lisa Moran-Parker, five children and seven grandchildren, according to the BBC.

Tributes flooded in from across the movie industry, with fellow director David Puttnam saying: 'Alan was my oldest and closest friend, I was always in awe of his talent.
