Has Russia Developed The World's First COVID-19 Vaccine?

Volunteers can now sign up for large coronavirus vaccine studies Russian University Claims World's First COVID-19 Vaccine, Clinical Trials Over

An investigational vaccine created to protect against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was generally well tolerated and resulted in production of both binding and neutralizing antibodies in healthy adult volunteers, according to interim results of an ongoing phase 1 trial published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The tests performed on the volunteers in Russian Federation reportedly showed that they were developing immunity to Coronavirus, but the name of the drug wasn't revealed.

"Russia and China have fast-tracked the process, United States of America and UK too are trying to fast-track the development programme". Other than Covaxin, the coronavirus vaccine developed by Oxford University/Astra Zeneca and the Chinese coronavirus vaccine "Sinovac" are approved for PHASE-III of human trials by WHO. But the speed at which the vaccines are being developed has left public health experts anxious about their long-term safety and protection. The vaccine is being developed by Bharat Biotech, in collaboration with National Institute of Virology, Pune.

But some in the scientific community said they would reserve judgment until they saw the full results in peer-reviewed form. The New England Journal of Medicine. The second dose will be given to them after 14 days.

More than 4000 Queenslanders put their hands up to participate in the trial which researchers hope will be a breakthrough in combating the virus.

More than half the participants experienced mild or moderate side-effects, though these did not rise to the level where the trial would be called off.

In cases where there were side effects from the vaccine, most commonly participants felt fatigue, chills, headache and myalgia, all of which were transient and mild or moderate in severity, according to the news release.

Three participants did not receive their second dose.

As of Monday morning, the total number of cases stood at 1,29,10,357, while the fatalities rose to 5,69,128.

"The results look pretty good and look pretty consistent", David Lo, a professor of biomedical sciences at University of California Riverside told AFP. Sure enough, the vaccine provided a hoped-for immune boost.

Results for Phase 1 are expected to be available after about three months, with plans to progress to the next stage of trials as soon as possible.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry had said that data shows "volunteers of the first and second groups are forming an immune response after injections of the vaccine against the coronavirus".

In the study, researchers looked at antibodies against the receptor-binding domain, part of the spike protein on the outside of the virus.
