The Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University has been successful in testing the COVID-19 vaccine on monkeys and is going to begin human trials.

Yesterday, the Russian embassy in India tweeted out an update on the vaccine they have been working on.

CU-Cov19 - a novel coronavirus vaccine being developed by a Thai research team in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania - is expected to enter mass production by the end of the third quarter next year, the research team said yesterday (July 12). The #vaccine is safe.

He also stressed that any vaccine candidate must be introduced very cautiously, and that at least two years of clinical trials are usually required before it is massively applied to the population.

Just a Phase I trial?

Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech and Pune-based Serum Institute's efforts are in full swing to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

Earlier, results of the COVID-19 vaccine tests performed on a group of volunteers in Russian Federation showed that they were developing immunity to the coronavirus. Two weeks since the second injection on the 22nd of June, researchers have now taken the monkeys' blood samples and found a neutralizing antibody in every sample, described as such a satisfying finding.

Phase II trials involve larger numbers of subjects and are meant to test if the vaccine candidate does produce an immune response in subjects, and to once again test for safety.

"On Monday, 13 July, the second group of volunteers, who are tested for the efficiency and immunogenicity of the vaccine, will be injected with the second component of the vaccine against the coronavirus", the ministry stated. Even for ebola, the most recent vaccine approved for use by the World Health Organization, phase I trials began in November 2014, and the drug got World Health Organization approval for use in November 2019, a full five years later. According to the HT report, Lukashev stated that the vaccine's safety is confirmed.

According to Alexander Lukashev, a director at Sechenov University, the objective of this stage of the study was to show the vaccine's safety for human health, which was successfully done.

Precision Vaccinations published coronavirus vaccine development news. For comparison, there are now only 82 vaccine candidates still in active development for tuberculosis, according to the WHO.
