California's movie theaters, bars, indoor restaurants, wineries and museums statewide must be closed statewide due to the "alarming" spread of COVID-19, Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Monday.

On July 1, Newsom ordered many counties to close bars and indoor operations at restaurants, wineries, zoos and family entertainment centers like bowling alleys and miniature golf.

"We are moving back into a modification mode of our stay-at-home order", Newsom said.

On the Central Coast, Santa Barbara County has been on the state's monitoring list for a few weeks now. Those impacted must also close all indoor fitness centers, places of worship, hair salons/barbershops, personal care and malls.

By the numbers: California has reported a seven-day average of more than 8,500 new coronavirus cases per day, according to state data. Public health officials praised the state's quick action, marveling at how the nation's most populous state kept its cases and hospitalizations low while states like NY and New Jersey struggled to contain the highly contagious disease.

Also on Monday, the World Health Organization warns that the pandemic is worsening globally and things won't return to "the old normal" for some time.

Citing "skyrocketing infection rates", California's two largest school districts - serving the Los Angeles and San Diego areas - announced Monday that they would continue with online learning in the fall, rather than opening schools for in-person education.
