We should all worry about Racing Point's pace, says Red Bull boss

Formula 1: Renault protest legality of Racing Point car Renault lodge official complaint against Racing point

While some components, known as non-listed parts, are allowed to be bought from rivals, listed parts, which include the aerodynamic surfaces of the auto and, for the first time this year, the brake ducts, must be of the team's own design.

The Racing Point has been dubbed the "Pink Mercedes" for its likeness to last year's world title-winning vehicle.

Perez's spirited drive led the Racing Point charger to challenge Alex Albon for fourth before a contact between the pair damaged the Mexican's front wing and hindered his speed.

Spielberg bei Knittelfeld (Austria) (AFP) - Red Bull chief Christian Horner said "everyone" should be concerned about the pace of Racing Point this season after Renault protested the legality of their vehicle on Sunday.

"The FIA technical department representative was directed to seal and impound the relevant parts of cars 11 and 18 in preparation for conducting a detailed analysis of those pieces", the stewards' statement said.

Similarities between the Racing Point and last year's Mercedes grabbed attention during pre-season testing and the team has not shied from conceding they took inspiration from it.

A date for the case to be heard will be set once all the evidence has been gathered by the FIA technical representative.

Racing Point enjoys a close technical partnership with the world champions and already uses Mercedes' engine, gearbox and outboard suspension components, but all of these are allowed to be passed down in the regulations. The brake ducts are among the listed parts that every constructor must design for themselves, or have the exclusive use of the design in Formula 1.

But the demonstration confirmed that Racing Point's "pink Mercedes" is a force to be reckoned with, not only by F1's top midfield contenders but also by the front-running outfits.

The FIA says that the grounds of Renault's protest against Racing Point is admissible and the team's brake ducts have been impounded so detailed checks and comparisons with last year's Mercedes can be made.

"It's no different than what we did with [copying] the Red Bull when we ran a high-rake concept". Yes, we look to see what is fast and we thought: that's fast, can we do the same.
