The 2018/19 Premier League champions were initially banned from Uefa club competitions for two years in February for committing "serious breaches" of licensing and financial fair play (FFP) regulations, with an additional fine of €30 million.

It means they are free to play in the Champions League next season and, as a result, the race for Europe in the Premier League is now even tighter.

Since being acquired by Abu Dhabi in 2008, Manchester City has grown to become the world's sixth-biggest soccer club with annual revenue of more than 600 million pounds, according to Deloitte's Money League.

The Etihad Stadium outfit will now part with just a £9 million fine after they were initially fined £27 million, with CAS saying most of the alleged breaches reported were either not established or time-barred.

"It seems very, very unusual that UEFA have charged them, sentenced them to a two year ban and a 30million fine when they did not have a cast iron case".

"The Club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered", the club added.

The ruling will have significant ramifications for City's future finances but also for head coach Pep Guardiola and star players such as former Wolfsburg forward Kevin De Bruyne and England worldwide Raheem Sterling, who will be able to compete in the Champions League next season.

City's success raises major question marks surrounding UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations, despite the insistence that the rules are here to stay.

"Uefa notes that the CAS panel found that there was insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold all of the CFCB's conclusions in this specific case and that numerous alleged breaches were time-barred due to the five-year time period foreseen in the Uefa regulations".

City - who have maintained a position of confidence throughout the appeal process - have released a statement on the announcement welcoming the verdict, their permission to play in next season's Champions League a huge boost from both a sporting and financial aspect.

Two years earlier they were saved from a ban by CAS as the club was sold by Silvio Berlusconi to Chinese businessman Li Yonghong who then unloaded the San Siro giants to the American investment fund Elliott.

Sportsmail understands any UEFA challenge against the ban being overturned is "unlikely" at this stage, and City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak is said to now be desperate to ensure Guardiola pens an extension. Manchester City's ban has been overturned.

The FFP regulations are created to stop clubs running up big losses through spending on players.

Manchester United occupy fifth in the table as it stands, behind third-place Chelsea and fourth-place Leicester City.

In 2015, as a number of Premier League clubs outspent Arsenal, he said about FFP: "It has gone".
