Gholam Hossein Esmaili said that the administrator of the Amad News has been convicted of Efsad-e Fel-Arz (spreading corruption on the earth), according to Tasnim news agency.

Zam later appeared in televised confessions in recent months admitting his wrongdoings and offering an apology for his past activities. It was not clear when the sentence was handed down. During the previous session June 9, Zam pleaded not guilty to the leading charges, arguing that what he has done is nothing but journalism.

Iran has sentenced an opposition journalist to death after he reported on the damage Tehran's belligerent worldwide positions brought to the nation's economy, the Iranian state-controlled PressTV reported Tuesday. However, as the protests spread across the country, the backlash was directed towards the entire ruling class.

Zam ran Amadnews, an anti-government website that had around 1.4 million followers on the messaging app Telegram.

According to Zam, his channel shared logistical information about the late 2017 anti-government protests and circulated videos from the demonstrations.

It was shut down by the Iranian government, but later reopened under a different name.

The 2017 protests reportedly saw some 5,000 people detained and 25 killed. The cleric wrote a letter published by Iranian media in July 2017 in which he said he wouldn't support his son over AmadNews' reporting and messages on its Telegram channel. He said her time spent in jail would count towards the sentence.

"Ultimately, we were able to arrest him through cooperation with other intelligence services", Second Brigadier General Mohammad Tavallaei, a high-ranking IRGC official, said at the time.

Adelkhah and her French fellow researcher, Roland Marchal, were held in Iran's Evin Prison. Authorities released Mr Marchal in March in an apparent prisoner swap for Iranian Jalal Ruhollahnejad, who was held in France.

Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili announced Ruhollah Zam's sentence on Tuesday. The Persian writing on the podium reads, "defendant's place".
