More than 25 percent of the global cases come from the USA, according to the Johns Hopkins Data, as there have been at least 2,530,587 cases confirmed as of Saturday.

While the United States accounts for around one quarter of global deaths - 125,539 out of 499,124 worldwide - and has by far the highest death toll, the epicentre of the disease is now Latin America.

According to a Johns Hopkins database, more than 45,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported on Friday.

Brazil isn't alone: Peru, Chile, and Mexico have all reported more than 200,000 coronavirus cases.

On Saturday, Florida health officials reported 9,585 new coronavirus cases, a new daily record, according to the Orlando Sentinel. On Friday, the United States broke its all-time record for the highest number of reported COVID-19 cases in a single day - surpassing 40,000 for the first time.

India set a daily record on Saturday with more than 18,500 new cases and 385 deaths, bringing its total of registered cases to 500,000.

The United States has the largest number of coronavirus cases worldwide, with more than 2.5 million, according to Johns Hopkins.

The true death toll from the virus, which first emerged in China late past year, is widely believed to be significantly higher.

As The Washington Post noted Saturday, Texas, Florida, and Arizona have emerged as new epicenters, repeatedly breaking their own records for the number of observed single-day increases and experiencing increases in hospitalizations related to the virus.

China, New Zealand and Australia have seen new outbreaks in the past month, despite largely stifling local transmission.

Similarly, infections in Brazil are continuing to show an upward trend. Speaking by video link to the World Government Summit in Dubai on Monday, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that it took more than three months for the world to reach 1 million infections but that another million cases were recorded in just the previous eight days.
