Assange, who's detained in the United Kingdom on a US extradition request, gave the leader of LulzSec a list of targets to hack in 2012 and told this person that the most influential release of hacked materials would be from the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency or the New York Times, according to a statement Wednesday from the Justice Department.

The prosecutors said that WikiLeaks allegedly obtained and published the information it had from a hack into an "American intelligence consulting company by an "Anonymous" and LulzSec-affiliated hacker".

The new indictment does not add to the prior 18-count superseding indictment that was returned against Assange in May 2019, but it does broaden the scope of the conspiracy surrounding the alleged computer intrusions that Assange was previously charged with.

Prosecutors say the WikiLeaks founder damaged national security by publishing hundreds of thousands of classified documents, including diplomatic cables and military files on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, that harmed the US and its allies and aided its adversaries.

The British Government might be accused of psychological torture against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, 216 doctors from 33 countries warned in a letter that is circulating here on Friday.

On Wednesday, the indictment was expanded to accuse him of conspiring with a hacking collective known as LulzSec in 2012, which was "cooperating with the FBI" at the time, directing them to hack specific targets.

In a 37-page superseding indictment dated May 23, 2019, Assange was charged with eighteen counts, including conspiracy to obtain, receive, and disclose national defense information; unauthorized obtaining of national defense information; attempted unauthorized obtaining of national defense information; unauthorized obtaining and receiving of national defense information; unauthorized disclosure of national defense information; and conspiracy to commit computer intrusion.

Though the prosecutors have other claims against Assange and the groups of hackers, Engadget reported that it will not assure a longer sentence for the suspect.

The superseding indictment continues to allege that Assange conspired with former Army Intelligence Analyst Chelsea Manning to crack a password hash for a classified U.S. Department of Defense computer in order to access classified documents.

At one conference in Malaysia, called the "Hack in the Box Security Conference", Assange told the audience, "I was a famous teenage hacker in Australia, and I've been reading generals' emails since I was 17". As per the DOJ, Assange had asked the LulzSec leader to get mail, documents, databases and PDFs for one target. The hacker allegedly said that Assange "indirectly" asked him to spam this company again.

The letter notes that several human rights organizations are demanding the release of the cyber activist and oppose his eventual extradition to the United States, whose government wants to try him for publishing thousands of secret files of U.S. diplomacy and the Army on WikiLeaks.

Assange maintains he was acting as a journalist entitled to First Amendment protection.

Barry Pollack, Assange's lawyer said in a statement that "the government's relentless pursuit of Julian Assange poses a grave threat to journalists everywhere and to the public's right to know". His attorneys argue that the charges of Espionage and computer misuse against their client are politically motivated.
