According to its website, Microsoft has 83 physical stores showcasing and selling laptops, electronic gadgets, accessories, and other hardware worldwide.

Microsoft has operated physical retail stores for about a decade.

In a post on Linkedin, David Porter, corporate vice president, Microsoft store has listed three areas where the company aims to serve their customers. Microsoft adds that existing retail members will continue to serve consumers, small business, education and enterprise customers.

The company, whose stores have been dark since March due to the pandemic, said its retail employees will continue to serve customers providing sales, training, and support, working from Microsoft corporate facilities or remotely.

The four locations that will become Microsoft Experience Centers are in London, New York, Sydney and at the company's Redmond, Washington headquarters. The assessment mainly includes major assets written off and losses.

But while Apple Stores are an undisputed hit, Microsoft Stores just never caught on in quite the same way.

Last week, Microsoft said that it was listening to public health and safety experts before reopening the stores.

The first Microsoft store was opened in 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona after the launch of Windows 7.

There are approximately 72 stores in the U.S., and several others overseas showcasing and selling laptops and other hardware.

Microsoft entered the brick-and-mortar store business much later than Apple, which now has more than 500 retail locations. The team supported communities by hosting more than 14,000 online workshops and summer camps and more than 3,000 virtual graduations. The company will direct the retail team's personnel for online sales and support, and customers will continue to receive the service as before. Microsoft says these digital storefronts reach more than 1.2 billion people every month in 190 markets. Then they are connected to their nearby retailer, who guides them, processes payment and then gives them a time to pick the device from the store.

The company didn't say if the move would result in layoffs.
