California on Sunday ordered some bars to close as the state and a dozen others face the worst surge in CCP virus cases since the start of the pandemic.

The state ordered bars in Los Angeles, Fresno, Kern, San Joaquin, Tulare, Kings and Imperial counties to close immediately. Meanwhile, CA recommending they close in Contra Costa, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Stanislaus, & Ventura. Raising one's voice in a loud bar leads to greater projection of droplets, they said.

These factors have led to an increasing concern by public health professionals within California and throughout the nation identifying bars as the highest risk sector of non-essential business now open. On Friday, Newsom announced that 5.7 percent of the state's COVID-19 tests over the last week had come back positive.

"We are actively monitoring COVID-19 across the state and working closely with counties where there are increased rates and concerning patterns of transmission", said Dr. Sonia Angell, the state's public health director.

On Friday, Newsom said the numbers in Imperial County have been particularly alarming and have overwhelmed the region's hospitals.

The move comes as California reported 4,810 new COVID-19 cases and 33 additional deaths Sunday. "That's why it is critical we take this step to limit the spread of the virus in the counties that are seeing the biggest increases", Newsom said in a written statement obtained by the Los Angeles Times. The County Health Officer Order will be amended today to require that all bars, breweries, brew pubs, pubs, wineries and tasting rooms in L.A. County close unless they are offering sit-down dine-in meals. Almost 5,900 people have died from coronavirus complications in the state. Beyond the higher risk of transmission in bar settings, contract tracing, a key measure needed to control spread, is also more challenging in bars because of the constant mixing among patrons and a lack of record-keeping of those in attendance. However, as the state has reopened, the number of daily new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations has increased.

One bar in East Lansing, Michigan has been linked to more than 85 cases, according to local health officials who say that number is likely to rise.

The county Board of Supervisors took no immediate action to direct businesses to shut down, but local officials met with a state delegation Saturday to decide how to proceed.
