A powerful 7.4 magnitude quake struck southern Mexico on Tuesday leaving five people dead but an initial tsunami warning was later reversed.

After the quake shook the Oaxaca state of southern Mexico and central Mexico at 10:29 a.m. local time, buildings collapsed and local residents were evacuated, CNN reported.

The US Pacific Tsunami warning centre initially said hazardous waves as high as three meters could strike anywhere within 1,000 kilometres of the quake's epicentre, affecting the Pacific coast of Mexico and Central and South America.

The dead included a worker from state oil company Pemex, who suffered a bad fall, Mexico's civil protection agency said. Videos posted online from the affected area showed the ocean water receding from the shoreline.

He said he ran outside with relatives, but they had to stop in the middle of the street as the pavement buckled and rocked.

Eathquakes of magnitudes over 7 are major earthquakes capable of widespread, heavy damage.

A powerful natural disaster centered near Huatulco in southern Mexico was felt across the country, according to reports.

Power was cut in some areas around Mexico, but there were no reports of injures, Fox News reported.

That same year, 96 people died after an 8.1 magnitude quake struck the south of the country, with Oaxaca the worst affected state. It was very shallow, only 26 km (16 miles) below the earth's surface, which would have amplified the shaking.

A clinic and old churches in hill villages near the epicentre were severely damaged, images on social media showed.

Near to the epicentre, Magdalena Castellanos Fermin was in the village of Santiago Astata when the "really intense" quake struck, sending large rocks tumbling down the hillside and alarming residents, she told Reuters by telephone.

Six hours after the quake, 447 aftershocks had been recorded across the region, the strongest at 4.6 magnitude. While the facades of some buildings suffered damage, there were no reports of fallen structures, she said. Mexico city, the country's capital, is especially prone to earthquakes because it is situated on top of an ancient lake bed.
