Spain's La Liga will resume on 11 June with next season starting on 12 September, says the league's president Javier Tebas.

"The important thing will be when the season finishes although we'll only be able to congratulate ourselves when we start the following season", Tebas said on Friday in an online forum organized by Spanish newspaper Marca.

"God willing, we will restart on June 11".

At the start of May, LaLiga clubs returned to individual training and then stepped up to training in groups of ten players before progressing to groups of 14.

All organised football in Spain was provisionally suspended on March 12 as the virus spread in the country, but the rate of infection has slowed significantly.

With 11 rounds of fixtures remaining in the Spanish top-flight, Joan Gaspart, who led the Blaugrana between 2000 and 2003 suggests the league would have been cancelled had Los Blancos been leading the table.

The authorities in Spain are gradually lifting lockdown restrictions in a country where almost 30,000 people have died with COVID-19.

On a day when only two COVID-19-related deaths in the last 24 hours were reported - they peaked at 950 on April 2 - the Spanish government reached an agreement with LaLiga and the Spanish soccer federation for the restart to pro soccer behind closed doors.

With the Bundesliga heading into the fourth round of matches since returning, the Premier League and Serie A will also be returning in June.
