Trump walks back his incendiary Minneapolis 'thugs' post

The singer criticised Mr Trump for his response to violent protests in Minneapolis over an incident where a black man died while being arrested.
A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the military had ordered some active-duty Army military police officers to be prepared to deploy if local authorities requested their help.

Twitter flagged a post by Trump early Friday related to the violent George Floyd protests across the country.

"Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts", he said. "However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public's interest for the Tweet to remain accessible", the disclaimer reads. But some activists doubt that Trump has suddenly evolved on the issue of police brutality and instead see election year political calculations.
The Trump campaign accused Twitter, the media and Democrats of trying to divide Americans by "purposefully misrepresenting" Trump's words.
"It seems like they're carrying out a vendetta against the president", Republican Representative Steve Scalise said on Fox News Friday.
Trump's repeated condemnation of the killing and outreach to the man's family was a marked change in tone from his earlier comments that also invoked a civil-rights-era phrase fraught with racist overtones.
