Trump announces United States 'terminating' relationship with WHO

Trump courts Africa to counter coronavirus — and China Trump Says US 'Terminating' Its Relationship with WHO and Directing Those Funds Elsewhere

President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States is "terminating" its relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO), which he said failed to do enough to combat the initial spread of the novel coronavirus.

"China has total control over the World Health Organisation", Trump today told reporters.

Earlier this month, Trump threatened to withdraw from the World Health Organization, sparking opprobrium from global leaders who have said the worldwide group is more important than ever in the context of the pandemic.

Mike Ryan, head of the WHO's emergencies program, said the US funding provided the largest proportion of that program's budget.

President Trump said the United States would be "redirecting" the money to "other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs", without providing specifics.

Targeting the Chinese directly, Trump said he will issue a proclamation to secure university research and to "suspend the entry of certain foreign nationals from China who we have identified as a potential security risk". The move has alarmed health experts, who say the decision will undermine efforts to improve the health of people around the world. The U.S. had been the top contributor to the agency. He said his administration will look into eliminating policies that give Hong Kong preferential treatment.

Trump froze USA funding to the organization this month, and later made that freeze permanent. The president did not institute sanctions on Chinese officials as was anticipated.
