Mr Cummings also dismissed reports he had travelled to Durham again after returning to London, saying any such stories were "false".

"No, I have not offered to resign".

"I don't regret what I did and as I said, I think reasonable people may well disagree about how I thought about what to do in those circumstances but I think what I did was actually reasonable".

However, that was precisely what scientists and public health experts said both men had done.

During a press conference in the rose garden of the Downing Street, Cummings, the former Vote Leave chief who was the architect of Johnson's Brexit strategy, on Monday told reporters that he had behaved "reasonably", reports Xinhua news agency.

"My understanding is from what the Prime Minister said yesterday.is that at every stage Dominic Cummings followed and his family followed the guidance and at no stage did Dominic Cummings or his family break the law".

During the press conference, Cummings explained that he made the auto journey when his wife developed COVID-19 symptoms. Cummings fell ill while there, as did his son who briefly went to hospital.

Quizzed about a 30-mile drive he took with his wife and son from the family farm to a beauty spot, Barnard Castle, he said his eyesight had been affected by his illness and they wanted to check he would be able to undertake the journey back to London.

Cummings did not apologise for his behaviour but did express regret for not asking Johnson - himself already hospitalised for COVID-19 - for permission to travel during the lockdown's most restrictive phase.
