Giroir was referring to a resolution presented by the European Union that was unanimously adopted by the WHO's annual ministerial assembly of 194 states on Tuesday that called for a thorough evaluation "at the earliest appropriate moment".

Tedros, for his part, spoke to the board and pointed proudly to a long list of actions taken by World Health Organization to respond to the outbreak - without directly alluding to the Trump administration pressure that was highlighted by Giroir.

He added, "We still have a long way to go in this pandemic".

"In the last 24 hours, 106.000 new cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded in the world, which is the largest daily increase in the number of infected since the beginning of the pandemic", the WHO Director General said, adding that nearly two thirds of those cases were registered in four countries.

"In a sense, South America has become a new epicentre for the disease,"he said".

"But two thirds of these cases were reported in just four countries", Mr Ghebreyesus said.

Washington said Taiwan's continued exclusion "further damages the WHO's credibility and effectiveness".

More than 325,000 people have lost their lives, according to the AFP tally.

Over 106,000 cases of Covid-19 were reported globally to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday, May 20, the highest number in a single day since the outbreak began in December, with the total count reaching the "tragic milestone" of 5 million reported infections.

Pressed on the ultimatum, Tedros said only: "We have received the letter and we are looking into it".

"We would do this at the earliest possible time and this means when all the conditions are met so we will consider several conditions but we want to do it at the earliest possible time". Only the United States and Russian Federation have counted more cases than Brazil has.

"At this stage, (neither) hydroxychloroquine nor chloroquine have been as yet found to be effective in the treatment of COVID-19 nor in the prophylaxis against coming down with the disease", Ryan said.

Questions are being raised by some countries, including the United States, about whether WHO's warning system for alerting the world to outbreaks is adequate, and suggesting that member states might need to "reassess" its role in providing travel advice to countries.

US President Donald Trump on Monday made the surprise announcement that he is taking hydroxychloroquine, despite his own government experts saying it is not suitable for fighting coronavirus. Some 3,000 patients are taking part in the trials in 320 hospitals across 17 countries.
