When the local media asked Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford about Trump not wearing protective gear, he said, "It's up to him".

First, Trump didn't wear a mask during his tour, despite the company's policy of requiring everyone inside the plant to be wearing a face covering.

President Trump holds his protective face mask as he speaks while touring Ford's Rawsonville Components Plant that has been converted to making personal protection and medical equipment, Thursday, May 21, 2020, in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Pandemic politics shadowed the trip to MI as he highlighted lifesaving medical devices, with the president and officials from the electoral battleground state clashing over federal aid, mail-in ballots and face masks. "I want it open, and we're going to open, and if there's a fire, an ember, a flame someplace, we put it out". "And I hope that the voters of MI will remember this when November comes, that he didn't care enough about their safety, he didn't care about their welfare, he didn't respect them enough just to engage in the very simple task, the painless task, the easy task of wearing a mask when he was provided one", she vented.

"I wore one in this back area, but I didn't want to give the press the pleasure of seeing it. I had goggles and a mask right back there".

A person familiar with the White House's thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations said Trump had called the news conference, which had not been on his public schedule, because he wanted to be the face of church reopenings, knowing how well it would play with his base. He said he also wore googles. According to an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll published this week, 77 percent of American adults say that they worry about a second wave of coronavirus happening as more businesses across the country reopen.

Beyond the astonishingly very bad optics of a president of the United States wearing a medical mask there is a practical reason for the commander in chief to forego them at public events. But the company did claim that they did share its safety policies with the White House before the tour actually took place - including the requirement to wear face masks at all times.

Nessel responded to Trump's attack with two tweets of her own, accusing him of lying.

In a response to Trump's tweet, Nessel suggested Trump has a problem with all three women in leadership roles in MI, "as well as your ability to tell the truth". The company held a special tour for the US President recently and Trump was seen not consistently wearing it.
