Jets showing interest in free agent RB Devonta Freeman

Freeman could change his stance depending upon how many other offers he receives.

Playing one of the most physically demanding positions in football, it's wise of the veteran running back to take his time and get the best offer and situation in order to make the most of his next opportunity. Because of Penny's uncertain status, the Seahawks are reportedly giving thought to signing Devonta Freeman.

General manager John Schneider told KJR-AM in Seattle earlier this month that Carson (hip) is expected to be ready by Week 1 but that Penny's recovery from reconstructive knee surgery might sideline him beyond then.

The Seahawks are also interested in free agent Carlos Hyde, who played for the Houston Texans in 2019.

Hyde will turn 30 on September 20 and has played for four teams in the last three years after initially being drafted by the 49ers in the second round out of Ohio State in 2014.

Seattle's offense was notably hobbled entering the 2019 playoffs after seeing their RB group (Rashaad Penny, Chris Carson, C.J. Prosise) ravished by injury at the end of the season, which led to the return of fan favorite Marshawn Lynch.

The Seahawks likely view Freeman as a proven veteran who can fill a void while Penny is out, and it's no surprise they don't want to spend big for him.

Freeman gained a combined 3,000 yards and scored 29 touchdowns from 2015 to 2017, including consecutive seasons (2015-16) in which he gained at least 1,000 yards and earned trips to the Pro Bowl.

The Seahawks open the 2020 regular season against the Falcons in Atlanta.
