Wuhan Bans on the Hunting, Breeding and Human Consumption of Wild Animals

Wuhan, center of coronavirus pandemic, bans eating wild animals China legislators take on wildlife trade, but traditional medicine likely to be exempt

As on Wednesday, Shulan city in the province of Jilin was put under a lockdown similar to how Wuhan was in the beginning of the outbreak.

The local administration of Wuhan have reportedly also banned wildlife hunting unless it is for research purposes, disease monitoring, or population control.

The pandemic has been blamed on a seafood market in Wuhan that is believed to have sold wild animals such as bats and pangolins, and China has promised new legislation to make the ban permanent.

The notice also says illegal wildlife trading is "comprehensively prohibited" and there will be strengthening of "the supervision and inspection of wild animals".

Wuhan is located in Hubei province, very close to Hunan and Jangxi, where regional governments are offering to compensate wildlife breeders to switch to plant-based farming.

China, however, implemented actions to forbid the trade and consumption of wild animals after the SARS outbreak, these failed to bring the trade to a halt.

There are over 2,300 licensed breeders in the province according to state-run Jiangxi Daily newspaper.

A civet cat - the animal believed to have carried Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) to humans in another coronavirus outbreak almost two decades ago - would fetch 600 yuan. Authorities would evaluate farms and inventories and offer a one-off payment. The buyouts have so far been presented in Hunan and Jiangxi provinces.

In a statement, it said when the first report of three cases of pneumonia of unknown causes was made on December 27, 2019 by Dr Zhang Jixian of the critical care department of the Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, the country responded promptly using laid down procedure.

That means the practices that lead to cross-species virus transmission could continue, said Peter Li, China policy specialist with Humane Society International, an animal rights group.

This is not the first time such measures have been undertaken.

In February, China's parliament issued a temporary ban on the trade and consumption of wildlife, Business Insider previously reported.
