Lana Del Rey Fires Back at Critics Who Claim She's "Glamorizing Abuse"

Lana Del Rey confirms release date for new album in fiery statement Lana Del Rey confirms new album and hits back at accusations she's 'glamorizing abuse'
Hannah Rogers | 22 May, 2020, 22:40

Hitting back in the comments section of her post on Thursday night, Del Rey claimed she had named the musicians she did because they are among her favourites, adding she, "would also like to have some of the same freedom of expression without judgment of hysteria". People targeted Lana for trying to put her music and its content on the same level as the biggest musicians in the world. Girl, sing your little cocaine carols and leave us alone.

After posting to her 16 million followers, Lana stepped into her own comments section to clear up she didn't mean any offence in mentioning the other stars, calling them her "favourite" singers, and denied it had anything to do with race. Kehlani got death + rape threats for a breakup song.

Lana denied the racism accusations and insisted she had no issue with any of the women she mentioned in her statement.

Initially, Del Rey lit up social media with a question to the culture.

Referencing Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Kehlani, Nicki Minaj, and Beyoncé by name, Lana questioned whether she is allowed to go back to singing about "feeling handsome by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect" or dancing for money, without being "crucified" or "glamourizing abuse" as the aforementioned ladies have allegedly earned number one singles with "songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f***ing, cheating etc".

People are arguing Lana has enjoyed nothing but success throughout her career, and are wondering why she can't let Doja, a relative newcomer to the industry enjoy her newfound fame without bringing her down.

Over the past few years, Lana has found her music getting categorized and stereotyped.

One fan tweeted: "And seriously what the hell is Lana Del Rey even crying about?"

Yet Del Rey was unrepentant and suggested her comments were being wilfully misinterpreted.

Later on in the letter she said she was "fed up" for being criticized for her lyrics.

Lana Del Rey has a new album coming out, and confirmed the follow-up to 2019's Grammy-nominated album Norman Fucking Rockwell! will be released this coming September.
