Facebook To Expand Remote Working, Looking For Talent In New Locations

Facebook's CEO says the company will begin Zuckerberg says Facebook staff can work from anywhere — for a price

"There'll be severe ramifications for people who are not honest about this", he added.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday remote work is here to stay, and that half of the social network's staff could be doing jobs from afar within a decade.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday he was "pretty confident" his company could help prevent attempts to influence the political outcome of the U.S. presidential election later this year. But they won't all be paid as if they had to afford Bay Area rents.

"Since so much of what we build is around helping people feel connected no matter where they are - like our messaging apps, video chat and eventually virtual and augmented reality - living our values will help us accelerate the development of these technologies", noted Mr Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg said he wanted to protect Facebook workplace culture shaped on Silicon Valley campuses, known for playful, creative atmospheres, gourmet meals and other fun perks. The company will begin by focusing on hiring for advanced engineering positions, Zuckerberg said.

Zuckerberg said that in a company survey, of the people who said they would want to work remotely full time, about 45% were "pretty confident" that they would move to another place if they had that opportunity, with an additional 30% saying they "might" move.

"That means we have been missing out on a lot of talented people just because they live outside a major hub".

Currently, most Facebook workers can opt to work from home through the end of the year, thanks to the pandemic. Whereas, Cupertino-based Apple is bringing back its staff to stores in different phases after it shut down its retail operations amid the virus outbreak.

Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) will scout for remote workers this summer, expand its hiring activities in areas surrounding its main engineering sites, and search for talent in new cities.

Zuckerberg devoted a live-streamed "town hall' meeting with employees to how a remote-work trend compelled by the pandemic is being embraced by employees without affecting productivity".

Given the current global situation, nearly all major companies have given their employees an option to work remotely but now that the world is gearing up to adopt the "new normal", different companies seem to be having a different approach for how to work.

The social media giant is faced with finding a fine line between allowing freedom of expression while also maintaining a platform that does not spread disinformation or cause harm to its users.
