Engel threatens subpoena over Pompeo's handling of GOP Hunter Biden probe

Senate Committee Issues First Subpoena in Biden Burisma Investigation Senate panel approves subpoena in Biden-related probe as GOP ramps up investigations

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved subpoenas Wednesday to seek documents on the work Hunter Biden, the son of presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, did for the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

Democrats accuse the Republicans of seeking the investigation in a bid to help Trump's reelection campaign.

It will cover records dating back to January 1, 2013, regarding the public relations firm's work for Burisma.

House Democrats accused Trump of attempting to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine past year, and of pressuring Zelensky to restart an investigation into Burisma and the Bidens which was halted in 2016 following Vice President Biden's personal intervention.

Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) objected to the subpoena and said the "extremely partisan investigation" is pulling apart the committee and will damage the committee's long tradition of non-partisan oversight.

But Johnson says that he's moving forward with the investigation because people "need to know the truth".

Lindsey Graham, head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he would release the findings of his committee's investigation into the FBI's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion between Russia and Trump campaign officials. Trump, who was impeached for trying to get Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to announce an investigation of the Bidens, has vowed to make Hunter Biden a major campaign issue. Burisma employed Hunter Biden as a board member, paying him hundreds of thousands of dollars for a sinecure that he has acknowledged was due at least in part to his father's famous name. No evidence has emerged to suggest that Joe Biden acted in that capacity to benefit his son.

Blue Star Strategies, owned by former Clinton administration officials Karen Tramontano and Sally Painter, was hired by Burisma in 2015 to try to smooth over allegations of corrupt activity by the energy company.

The chairman of the Republican-led panel, Wisconsin Sen. "The committee should not conduct politically motivated investigations". "At no time have we ever stated or indicated in any way that we would not cooperate".

"And it's still a nothingburger", he said.

Following the committee vote, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (Democrat-New York) accused Republicans of promoting "conspiracy theories".

"It appears the subpoena is just for show, a way to create the false impression of wrongdoing", he said. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., writing that they don't understand the need for a subpoena.
