Anthony Fauci: Sports might not happen this year

Top US expert says COVID-19 second wave 'inevitable' Anthony Fauci: Sports might not happen this year
Bennie Garza | 30 April, 2020, 15:41

Excited fans, bursting with anticipation for the game ahead, usually step off the ferry from Vallejo and onto those piers, making their way into the ballpark under the scenic gaze of cerulean blue water and the city skyline peaking over the park.

With professional sports suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fans are flustered as they pine for the world that sometimes kept them sane during this time of year.

Top U.S. infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci said on Tuesday in an interview with the Economic Club of Washington that he was "almost certain" the coronavirus would come back in the fall. "If you can't guarantee safety, then unfortunately you're going to have to bite the bullet and say, 'We may have to go without this sport for this season'". I know it's going to be hard for them not to be out in society, but that may be the price you pay if you want to play ball.

Dr. Fauci said even though the improvement in recovery time is not a knockout 100%, the results are highly significant. "I know it's going to be hard for them not to be out in society, but that may be the price you pay if you want to play ball".

Despite recent optimism over reductions in how many positive tests are being reported week-to-week - Ontario, for example, reported its lowest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases in more than three weeks on Wednesday - the potential for a surge in cases once areas of society begin opening up again remains a threat, one that must be accounted for before sports could resume.

Fauci's interview with the NY Timas came on the same day the Major League Baseball were discussing a plan to come back in the Summer and play a shortened season with realigned divisions.

The NBA and Major League Baseball have also reportedly mulled over playing games inside some sort of "bubble". As recently as early April, Fauci was saying that there was a way for sports to return without fans in the stands. His predictions come as he warned of a potentially "bad" fall and winter if the USA is not adequately prepared for a second wave of COVID-19 cases, according to CNN.

"I would love to be able to have all sports back", he added. "But as a health official and a physician and a scientist, I have to say, right now, when you look at the country, we're just not ready for that yet".
