John Morad, a friend of Kaline's, confirmed to The Associated Press that he died Monday at his home in MI.

"R.I.P. Mr Tiger, Al Kaline".

A cause of death was not immediately available, according to the Free Press.

Detroit Tigers CEO Christopher Ilitch pledges to support part-time event employees and minor league players while the coronavirus pandemic postpones the season.

Kaline, known affectionately as "Mr. Tiger", spent his entire 22-year career with the Detroit Tigers, first debuting in 1953 as an 18-year-old.

Kaline was on the 1968 team that won the World Series and joined the 3,000-hit club in September 1974, in the final days of his career. Kaline, who had a.297 career batting average, hit for.300 or better in nine seasons.

"The MLBPA extends its sympathies to Al's family, the Tigers organization, and all of those whose lives he touched as a Hall of Fame player and ambassador for the game". He retired after just crossing the 3,000-hit threshold and only one long ball shy of 400 home runs. He owns a host of franchise records, including most games played (2,834) and home runs (399).

Those accomplishments led to the Tigers retiring Kaline's No. 6 in 1980. If that wasn't enough to earn his nickname, Kaline also served as an adviser for Avila and former Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski.
