The numbers from the coronavirus outbreak seem daunting, more than 70,000 confirmed cases and a death toll nearing 1,800.

There have been some 900 cases around the world, with five deaths in France, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

As many as 2,112 deaths have been reported in mainland China, while the number of confirmed cases stands at 74,185, South China Morning Post reported.

Outside of toughest-hit Hubei, which has been effectively locked down to consider to incorporate the virus, the quantity of new conditions has been slowing and China's nationwide overall health authority has reported this is a sign the outbreak is less than command.

Hundreds of Americans have been flown back to the United States from virus hotspots and are under quarantine. The day before, as officials screened them, onboard events continued, including dances, quiz games and an exercise class, one passenger said.

The province also reported a sharp drop in newly confirmed cases at 349 on Wednesday, compared with 1,693 a day before. In the Heilongjiang province bordering Russian Federation, 464 cases were confirmed, 11 people died and 106 others recovered.

However, the World Health Organization has cautioned that it was too early to tell if the decline would continue.

The Chinese authorities registered an outbreak of the new coronavirus in the city of Wuhan.

The fatality rate for these confirmed cases is 2.3-2.8 per cent for males versus 1.7 per cent for females. More than half of those cases have been on a cruise ship quarantined off Japan. The goal of sending the aircraft is to evacuate the stranded Indians and deliver medical supplies to the people of China affected by the coronavirus. He had a fever and tested positive for the virus, dying a week later. More than 12,000 people have recovered, according to Chinese authorities.

That's lower than for SARS and MERS, which are caused by two similar viruses, but COVID-19 ultimately could prove more deadly if it spreads to far more people than the others did.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention commended Japan for its quarantine efforts but said in an update that "it may not have been sufficient to prevent transmission among individuals on the ship".

The health commission said it was reducing its count of infections by 279 after lab tests found they had wrongly been included in the tally.

Separately, South Korea evacuated six South Koreans and a Japanese family member who were put into an additional 14-day quarantine.

It did not state how numerous 256 Canadian passengers of the Diamond Princess would be evacuated, though the 43 who have tested positive for the virus will remain in the hospital in Japan.
