EA Canceled a Star Wars Battlefront Spinoff Last Year

The report comes from Kotaku's Jason Schreier, who cites six anonymous sources familiar with the Battlefront spinoff project and its cancelation.

Project Viking wasn't a complete unknown.

EA's Visceral studio spent two years developing a Star Wars heist game called Ragtag under director Amy Hennig (Uncharted), before it was cancelled.

Schreier also dropped two more bombshell news items regarding EA and Star Wars.

Last year, EA canceled an unannounced Star Wars project that was once envisioned as a Battlefront spinoff. Kotaku broke the news of Orca's cancelation past year.

Because of these issues, the game would not have been ready to release alongside PS5 and Xbox Series X, so EA canceled the project during the first half of 2019. Viking was initially handled by EA's Vancouver studio, before Criterion - better known for the Need for Speed series - was brought in. That was when the problems started.

"Although Criterion was, on paper, the lead studio, the logistical challenges of cross-country game development made that a hard proposition", Kotaku says.

Criterion reportedly "had an ambitious vision for the game, aiming to put a strong focus on story and characters". At that time, EA said that Ragtag art assets were being given to EA Vancouver for an open-world Star Wars game that would eventually become Orca before it too was canceled and replaced by Viking, and in 2019 that would subsequently be canceled as well.

"It soon became clear that Viking would never be finished in just a year and a half, and EA's executives had no interest in extending the timeline". It was said to fill a financial hole in that window.
