Passengers from coronavirus cruise ship arriving in Cornwall

Plane carrying Canadians evacuated from quarantined cruise ship lands in Trenton Canadian cruise ship passengers stranded in Japan begin quarantine in Canada

More than 200 Canadians who were quarantined at CFB Trenton after arriving on the first plane from Wuhan on February 7 and a separate United States charter flight are due to be released from the base Friday, CTV said.

The ship was quarantined on February 5 when a passenger who left in Hong Kong was found infected with the virus.

All repatriated passengers on the chartered flight had tested negative for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, while the Canadians who contracted the illness did not board the flight, CBC News said.

There were 256 Canadians on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, quarantined in Yokohama and 47 of them have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, officials said. The Diamond Princess is the site of the most COVID-19 infections outside of China, where the illness emerged late a year ago.

Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement said she wasn't consulted about the plan to establish a quarantine center in the border city.

Canadian passengers from the cruise ship Diamond Princess arrive to board a plane at Haneda airport in Tokyo, Japan Feb. 21, 2020. They have been admitted to a dozen hospitals in Japan near Yokohama, Foreign Affairs Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said, and they will remain in Japan for treatment while they receive "tailored" consular services.

Others who chose to stay behind - with loved ones who are sick, for instance - will be subjected to a mandatory quarantine when they return to Canada on commercial flights. An aircraft brought passengers to the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, where underwent a a further assessment. Eastern time, where they were screened for symptoms before they were taken by bus to Cornwall.

A good portion of the area at the Nav Centre was being fenced on Thursday, signalling the start of the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) quarantine measures in the building.

Col. Ryan Deming, commander of 8 Wing Trenton, assured safety risks are low for families in and around the base when he attended a press conference on Wednesday flanked by federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu who toured the base quarantine zone earlier in the day.

It was the third flight to evacuate Canadians from coronavirus quarantine, after two earlier ones from the outbreak epicenter in Wuhan, China.

Government officials say none of the evacuees at the base has shown any symptoms of the virus during their stay, and Tam said there will be no need for public health to maintain contact with them.
