The provincial health commission said last week that it would begin recognizing computerized tomography (CT) scan results as confirmation of infections, allowing hospitals to isolate patients more quickly. Two other places outside mainland China - Hong Kong and the Philippines - have previously confirmed one death each.

"I'd be pretty confident though that eventually every country will have a case". The inclusion of those cases drives the surge in the number of new confirmed cases.

Officials explained the uptick Thursday by saying they had reclassified how they were diagnosing and counting cases of COVID-19.

Beijing- The Chinese province at the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak reported a record rise in the death toll on Thursday under a new method for diagnosing cases, as health experts warned the epidemic could get worse before it gets better.

The provincial capital Wuhan, with 32,994 total confirmed cases and 1,036 deaths, accounted for the majority of the provincial tally. Ying worked very closely with China's General Secretary Xi Jinping (習近平) during his time as the governor of Zhejiang province, reported Reuters.

Dozens of low-level health officials across the country have also lost their jobs for failing to contain the spread of the epidemic, which is believed to have emerged from a seafood market in Wuhan where wildlife was traded illegally.

The virus is believed to have originated late a year ago at a seafood market in Hubei province's capital Wuhan.

China mostly closed as 60m quarantined

Many countries have implemented travel restrictions on recent visitors to China, which has more than 99% of the world's reported infections.

Airlines say part of the reason is a dramatic drop-off in demand, but the U.S. has also introduced strict restrictions on travellers to the United States who have visited China, barring almost all non-US residents if they have been in China within the previous14 days.

In Vietnam, official media reported that a village of 10,000 northwest of the capital, Hanoi, was put in lockdown due to a cluster of cases there.

The online newspaper VN Express cited a senior official of Ving Phuc province as reporting an increase in cases in Son Loi commune.

Dr Tedros also praised Cambodia for taking in the Westerdam, a United States cruise ship that had earlier been turned away from ports in Japan, Thailand and Taiwan despite having no sick patients on board.

The biggest cluster of cases outside China is on a cruise ship quarantined off the Japanese port of Yokohama, where a further 44 cases were reported on February 13. No cases of the viral illness have been confirmed among its 1,455 passengers and 802 crew members, according to operator Holland America Line.

A cruise ship which had spent two weeks at sea after being turned away by five countries over fears that someone on board might have the coronavirus arrived in Cambodia on Thursday, satellite-tracking data showed.
