The NIA, which has been probing multiple cases of terror financing, said Saeed created the Falah-i-Insaniyat Foundation (FIF) along with the deputy chief of FIF, a man named Shahid Mahmood.

Radical cleric Hafiz Saeed was present in the courtroom in Pakistan's second largest city, Lahore, when he was found guilty of being a member of a banned group and collecting money to fund terrorist activities.

The crackdown on Saeed's outfit a year ago followed a warning by the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to Pakistan to deliver on its commitments to curb terror financing and money laundering.

On July 3 previous year, 13 top leaders of the banned outfit, including its chief Saeed and Naib Emir Abdul Rehman Makki, were booked in almost two dozen cases of terror financing and money laundering under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

The JuD said Pakistan had been taking what it said were illegal and unconstitutional actions lately against Saeed and the groups, under pressure from the West, and to please the FATF.

"We have seen media reports that a court in Pakistan has sentenced UN-designated and internationally proscribed terrorist Hafiz Saeed in terror financing case".

Pakistan has vocally reaffirmed its commitment to implemet the NAP to get itself out of grey list.

Hafiz Saeed was arrested in July a year ago in connection with the terrorism financing case while on his way from Lahore to Gujranwala.

The FATF is backed by the UN Security Council passed resolutions which made its recommendations binding and in case of deficiencies, sanctions could be imposed. This means that both convicts will have to undergo only five and a half years jail term and the time of their jail term will start from the date of arrest. Saeed and Prof Zafar Iqbal were later indicted in a similar case on December 20.

In October a year ago, the Financial Action Task Force indicted Pakistan for failing to deliver on 22 out of 27 targets it had set for the country.

She was referring to Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant group that both Washington and New Delhi hold responsible for 26/11 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people.

The US named Saeed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, and the US, since 2012, has offered a Dollars 10 million reward for information that brings Saeed to justice.

The JuD leader was arrested by the CTD in July.2019 in lieu of 23 FIRs registered against him and his aides at different CTD police stations in Punjab.

The cases were registered against Saeed and others in Lahore, Gujranwala and Multan for collection of funds for terrorism financing through assets/properties made and held in the names of Trusts/Non Profit Organisations including Al-Anfaal Trust, Dawatul Irshad Trust, Muaz Bin Jabal Trust, etc. "This way they avoid being put on the blacklist because now they can say they've acted against terrorism and terror financing", said the official. "They will be prosecuted in ATCs (Anti Terrorism Courts) for commission of these offences", the CTD said.
