The Chinese province at the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak reported a record rise in the death toll on Thursday, as global health experts warned the epidemic could get far worse before it is brought under control.

Almost 15,000 new cases have been reported in a 24-hour period, taking the total number of cases to just under 60,000.

That adds a "clinical diagnosis case" classification to identify suspected cases who appear to have pneumonia so that patients can be accepted as soon as possible and treated as confirmed cases, Mi said, adding that should "reduce severe illness and mortality".

Other changes have been taking place in the province, including the sacking of a top Red Cross official in Wuhan for dereliction of duty and the removal of health officials in other cities.

Reports in state-run media said provincial Communist Party boss Jiang Chaoliang had been sacked as secretary of the Hubei Provincial Committee, and Ma Guoqiang had been removed as party chief in the provincial capital Wuhan.

The public has widely criticized local officials for their handling of the outbreak.

The online newspaper VN Express cited a senior official of Vinh Phuc province as reporting an increase in cases in Son Loi.

The rise in the toll more than doubled the prior provincial daily record of 103 set on Monday, while the number of new cases soared by 14,840 - also a daily record - to a total of 48,206 cases.

In an unprecedented measure to contain the disease, recently dubbed COVID-19, the Chinese government has placed the hardest-hit cities - home to more than 60 million - under lockdown.

While much attention has been focused on the passengers of the luxury liner, who are confined to their cabins, the ship's anxious crew, including Filipinos and an estimated 160 Indian nationals, have appealed for rescue.

The Times reported that under the new guidelines, patients undergo a CT scan of their lungs and observed by doctors to see if they're symptomatic.

A cruise ship which had spent two weeks at sea after being turned away by five countries over fears that someone on board might have the coronavirus arrived in Cambodia on Thursday, satellite-tracking data showed.

Even though no one on board has fallen ill, the ship was denied permission to dock by Japan, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines and Thailand.

One health expert has warned that countries around the world are only at "the beginning of the outbreak".
