New Software Issue Threatens to Delay 737 MAX Again

Boeing addresses new 737 MAX software issue that could keep plane grounded longer Max aircraft is seen parked in a storage area at the company's production facility in RentonMore

The MAX has been grounded worldwide since March 13, 2019.

As Boeing struggles to return the company's best-selling aircraft to service, it has identified another, unrelated software bug in the grounded plane's flight control computer that subsequently reported to the FAA, reportedly delaying the plane's upcoming certification flight.

Just last week, the company released internal messages that showed employees had mocked and ridiculed customers and regulators alike.

The monitor check is supposed to happen automatically when the plane or system is powered up, but during a recent review, one of the monitors didn't start up correctly, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a detail that was not announced publicly.

'Our highest possible concern is making certain the 737 MAX is secure and also satisfies all governing demands prior to it goes back to solution'.

That report concluded that federal regulators followed established procedures when they certified the Boeing 737 MAX and did not delegate too much safety oversight for the plane to the airplane manufacturer itself. The 737 Max, which analysts say is the largest manufactured product exported from the US, was grounded worldwide in March 2019 after the second of two deadly crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that killed a total of 346 people, and on Monday, Dec. 16, 2019, Boeing announced that it would halt Max production in January 2020 with no date for it to resume. The stock closed down 2.3% in NY at $324.15, the day's biggest loser on the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The 737 Max's return to service has already been pushed back several times, resulting in thousands of cancellations for the airlines. However, the report clarifies that the snag would not occur during flight. Software systems on aircraft require a far higher degree of reliability and checks before approval than most consumer products do.

It's up to the FAA to decide when the plane is safe and can resume flying.

Separately on Friday, Fitch Ratings downgraded Boeing's debt rating. At least two said they would not put their own families on the plane. A week before his firing, the company made a decision to temporarily halt production of newer 737 MAX planes.

In an email from June 2018, before the first Max crash, one Boeing worker wrote: "Best part is we are re-starting this whole thing with the 777X with the same supplier and have signed up to an even more aggressive schedule".
