In an emailed statement, Hironaka said that everyone involved in the case at his practice had resigned. A spokeswoman at his firm declined to give a reason.

The news about Hironaka's resignation does not apparently address whether the lawyer quit protecting the fugitive former Nissan manager or resigned completely from his duties.

Hironaka, 74, who earned his nickname for sharp legal strategies and an enviable acquittal record, has said he was "dumbfounded" by Ghosn's escape, which he discovered via the media on the morning his client fled.

A second lawyer on Ghosn's three-member team, Takashi Takano, also quit on Thursday, an official in his office said.

Nissan Motor Co. said Thursday that former Chairman Carlos Ghosn used company funds for private events overseas, including a party held at the Palace of Versailles and paying for guests to attend the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

Ghosn, who fled Tokyo remaining month, suggested Reuters in an interview in Beirut along with his wife Carole that he modified into as soon as happy to shield in Lebanon for the the relaxation of his lifestyles and claimed he modified into as soon as treated with "brutality" for the period of his detention and bail in Japan.

Ghosn's saga has sparked worldwide intrigue in the weeks since he jumped bail and mysteriously fled to Lebanon while awaiting trial for charges of financial misconduct.

Japan has published worldwide search ads for the couple, which means that the two live as refugees in Lebanon and could be arrested if they leave their country.

The disgraced former executive jumped bail last month by hiding in a musical instrument case and boarding a flight to Lebanon.

Ghosn, who has signed on an global team of lawyers, has expressed willingness to stand trial in Lebanon.

"We have a board overseeing the alliance which is made up of people who are all extremely in favour of the alliance", Senard told a news conference, defending the changes he had made since joining Renault after Ghosn's arrest.

McIntyre said the lights were on 24 hours a day, making it impossible to sleep more than an hour at night, and that several of his fellow detainees told him they would confess to crimes they had not committed in order to shorten their time there.
