Hot Earth: NOAA says the last five years were planet's warmest

Scientists from USA agencies Nasa and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) also produce data sets for global temperature, each dating back to 1880, and find that 2019 is the second warmest on record.

"The year 2020 has started out where 2019 left off - with high-impact weather and climate-related events".

These showed that the average global temperature in 2019 was 1.1 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, creeping towards a globally agreed limit after which major changes to life on Earth are expected.

Other explanations that depend on natural causes - extra heat from the sun, more reflection of sunlight from volcanic particles in the atmosphere, and only random climate variations - "are all too small to explain the long-term trend", climate scientist at Princeton University said Michael Oppenheimer.

The records, which scientists began compiling in 1880, show that the last five years have been the planet's warmest, with 2016 now topping the list by just 0.07 of a degree Fahrenheit. He said that shows that the global goal can not be achieved.

The differences are largely down to how the scientists account for the polar regions, where data is sparse, the Met Office said.

And scientists say there is no doubt at all this is man-made climate change.

The 2010s averaged 58.4 degrees Fahrenheit (14.7 degrees Celsius) worldwide, or 1.4 degrees (0.8 C) higher than the 20th century average and more than one-third of a degree (one-fifth of a degree C) warmer than the previous decade, which had been the hottest on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "2019 concludes the warmest "cardinal" decade (those spanning years ending 0-9) in records that stretch back to the mid-19th century".

"As a climate scientist, this is not surprising", she said.

GENEVA: The past decade has been the hottest on record, the United Nations said Wednesday, warning that the higher temperatures were expected to fuel numerous extreme weather events in 2020 and beyond.

"The average global temperature has risen by about 1.1°C since the pre-industrial era and ocean heat content is at a record level", said Petteri Taalas, head of the UN's World Meteorological Organization, in a statement. In the U.S., Alaska, Georgia and North Carolina felt the highest average temperatures on record with overall above-average temperatures in most of the country.

US President Donald Trump has cast doubt on mainstream climate science.

If you want to know what this means for people and the world, just look at wildfire-stricken Australia, Schmidt and others said. As the space agency pointed out, this warming resulted in 2019's unprecedented fires and the ramped-up melting of Greenland's vast ice sheet.

Sea ice both in the Arctic and Antarctic reached their second-lowest levels in 40 years of monitoring, NOAA reported.

"The planet has a fever", Salas said, "and that's its symptom".
