The 2019 ocean temperature is about 0.075 degrees Celsius over 1981-2010 normal.

This implies that the ocean has absorbed approx 228 sextillions (228,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) joules of heat more than its average.

Bleached corals in the Pacific Ocean in May, spurred by unusually warm ocean temperatures.

The world's oceans are now heating at the same rate as if five Hiroshima atomic bombs were dropped into the water every second, scientists have said. They managed to calculate ocean temperatures down to 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) using observations from a variety of measurement devices from the World Ocean Database of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Scientists believe it has decimated marine life from plankton to whales and killed 100 million cod.

Over the past 10 years, ocean temperatures hit record highs.

The report also said ocean temperatures "in 2019 were the warmest in recorded human history".

They also estimate the rate of warming during the period between 1987-2019 was 450 per cent greater than the prior 30-year period from 1955 to 1986.

The oceans can be a good measure of the effect of climate change since they absorb the majority of excess heat from the atmosphere, the researchers wrote.

John ABRAHAM, co-author and professor of mechanical engineering at the University of St. Thomas in the United States, said, "It is critical to understand how fast things are changing".

The consequences of a warming ocean are far-reaching: We can expect more severe storms, unprecedented sea-level rise, and the death of marine animals.

Researches opine that while humans can attempt to reverse their effect on the climate, our oceans will take longer to respond than atmospheric and land environments.

Dr. Cheng, who works with researchers at the CAS Center Ocean Mega-Science, added: "This measured warming of the ocean is irrefutable and further evidence of global warming. There are no reasonable alternatives aside from the human emissions of heat trapping gases to explain this heating", Cheng added.

"The ocean heat content changes are the primary memory of global warming", Trenbeth said.

Between 2013 and 2015, the US West Coast experienced a similar heat wave, which scientists dubbed "the blob".

"The global ocean warming has caused marine heat waves in the Tasman Sea and other regions".

The past five years are the five hottest years for the ocean, the study found.

"When the Sun's energy reaches the Earth, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide". The following year, a hot spot in the Atlantic Ocean near the Carolinas contributed to Hurricane Florence's development. "Reduce, reuse and recycle and transferring to a clean energy society are still the major way forward".
