Sania Mirza made a positive return to competitive tennis after nearly two years away with an opening-round in women's doubles at the Hobart International on Tuesday.

She retired from the singles competition in 2013 after becoming the most successful Indian woman tennis player ever.

The former world No 1 and partner Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine beat Oksana Kalashnikova and Miyu Kato 2-6, 7-6 (3), [10-3] to advance to the quarter-finals.

Earlier in December, Mirza was named in the five-member Fed Cup team announced by All India Tennis Association (AITA) to represent the country in the Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Group I event.

Now the Sania Mirza duo will face off in opposition to America's Vania King and Christina McHale. The American pair defeated fourth-seeded Spaniard Georgina Garcia Perez and Sara Souribez Toromo 6-2, 7-5.

Nonetheless, they held their nerves in a hard-fought second set, as they won it 6-6.

Shortly after winning the game, Sania took to Twitter and shared an adorable photo with son Izhaan.

Sania's last tournament was China Open in October 2017 following which she took a long break owing to a combination of injuries and personal reasons.

In a gripping showdown, Sania and Kichenok didn't get off to a particularly good start as they made two double faults, failed to convert any of the seven breakpoints and lost their serve twice to fall 2: 6 behind the opening set.

Sania went on to say "feel very grateful and thankful for all the msgs, support and love I am receiving".

For your information, let us tell you that Sania, who has taken Indian tennis to new heights, has been number one in doubles and is a six-time Grand Slam victor. She reached 27th place in the 2007 WTA singles rankings.

However, she has also been hampered by career-threatening wrist and knee injuries.
