Writing to the head of the SNP, he said: "I can not accept any request for a transfer of power which would lead to new referendums on independence".

In a letter to the Scottish Government, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said a referendum would "continue the political stagnation Scotland has seen for the past decade". "And, the need for the independence movement and the SNP leadership to have open public debates and an acknowledgement of the situation that [Scotland] is in".

After the SNP secured an overwhelming majority of seats, Sturgeon insisted that the Scottish Government had a clear mandate from the Scottish people to press ahead with a second referendum.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote to Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Tuesday refusing her request to be given the powers to hold another Scottish independence referendum.

Scots voted by 55% to 45% to stay in the United Kingdom in a referendum in 2014.

The SNP leader has already ruled out holding a Catalan-style referendum on independence, which saw the Spanish region hold an unsanctioned poll in 2017 against the wishes of the Spanish government.

"Nobody realistically is thinking of unofficial referendums or a unilateral declaration of independence", said Hassan.

"In an independent Scotland we will always get the governments we vote for".

In 2021, the next elections to the Scottish Parliament will be held - and today hold more intrigue than ever.

The renewed push for Scottish independence was a key policy for the SNP at last year's general election.

Sturgeon and her party have vowed to hold another vote on independence, a promise which was given greater urgency after Johnson's election victory signaled that the United Kingdom would follow through with Brexit.

Although said to have made progress - with CIH Scotland revealing just over 50% of the overall target for completions had been met - Scottish Labour have warned that plans had been "diluted" by Housing Minister Kevin Stewart, of which only "the vast majority" of those 50,000 planned will be new-build.

The spat came after Ms Sturgeon demanded that she be allowed to hold a referendum on splitting up the UK.

On Saturday, 80,000 pro-independence supporters braved the wind and rain in Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, to show their support for Scottish statehood.

She believes that given the choice between independence for Scotland and exiting the European Union alongside Britain, the majority of Scots would opt for independence. The discontent and criticism of the [UK] government has not started building up.
