Marianne Williamson, the self-help author and activist, ended her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination on Friday.

"I stayed in the race to take advantage of every possible opportunity to share our message", Williamson wrote to supporters.

In a post on her website, Williamson said: "We will not be able to collect enough votes in the elections to promote our conversation as we do now".

"I learned many things about America during this campaign", Williamson said, adding, "These are not times to despair; they are simply times to rise up".

At the time, she founded the Los Angeles and Manhattan Centers for Living, which sought to provide free non-medical care to people with HIV, and Project Angel Food, which delivers food to homebound people with AIDS. In her message, Williamson said of whichever Democrat earns the nomination, that she "will be there with all my energy and in full support". The primaries could be closely contested among the best candidates, and I don't want to prevent a progressive candidate from winning one of them.

Williamson had not qualified for the Democratic debate next week. She became a favorite subject that night among the tweeting public, whether it was for her statements about harnessing love for political purposes or her unconventional delivery, which made made some riff about the candidate's magical powers, or joke about how she existed on some spiritual plane.

"I ran for president to help forge another direction for our country".

Williamson won admirers if not voters with a spirituality-focused campaign that promoted a politics of love and of conscience. "And yes ... love will prevail".

Williamson's most notable policy proposal was likely her call for at least $100 billion - but potentially as much as $500 billion - in reparations for the descendants of slaves. She also attracted attention during the debate the following month, when she declared that President Donald Trump had exploited a "dark psychic force of collective hatred". The spiritual author had laid off her campaign staff nationally, a former staffer confirmed to CNN last week.
